Chapter Eight

Plans within Plans

Nyles awoke with the sun. Even in the underground place, he knew the exact moment the first golden rays crept over the horizon. He got up quickly. He knew he had far too much on his mind to even try to go back to sleep. Washing quickly, he headed out for the cafeteria. This day was going to require a lot of coffee. A few people were out. Some of them were the nocturnal crew, and a few like him were early risers. Making his way to the coffee car, he was surprised to see Anaraba adding cream to her coffee.

She looked up as he approached. She smiled at him. “The fates have indeed been kind to me.”

He inhaled the deep, rejuvenating liquid as it poured into his cup. “Oh?” he asked, unsure if she was talking to him.

“I know that you are very busy with your current assignment, but I would like to sit down and talk with you when you have a free moment,” she replied.

Thoroughly confused, he just nodded. He didn’t want to appear rude. “Sure. As soon as this whole safe house thing is settled, we can do lunch or something.” He was completely taken aback by her offer.

“This is good. Send me a memo in Medical the day before, if you please.” She snapped the lid on her coffee, and she walked away without another word.

Nyles stirred his coffee pensively. Was it over what she had seen last night between him and Kyra? Perhaps, yet another to lay down a warning against any relationship they may have? Was it about the mission? Was it something completely unrelated? Nyles sighed deeply. It would just have to wait until this other matter was settled. Snapping on his own lid, he made his way toward Anthro, praying that the place was cleared. He had far too many things to do to be displaced, again.

Kyra sat up and yawned. The clock read five after six. She had slept surprisingly well. Now, it was time to work. She dressed quickly—a pair of jeans, black T-shirt, and hair braided in less than a minute. After picking up her notebook, she was out her door.

She walked to the next door, pausing and waiting to hear if he was already up. She heard nothing, so she slipped in, bearing in mind to tread softly. Father had looked very tired the night before. She wanted him to get the rest he needed. She sat down at the Simon terminal, sending off a breakfast request. He would be up by the time it arrived. Never in her life had she known him to sleep past 7:00 a.m. Tiptoeing to the door, she opened it just enough to peek in and see his sleeping form beneath the covers. She watched as his chest rose and fell with each steady breath.

Back in the study, she turned the dial on the gas fireplace. After settling into her chair, she pulled out her notebook.
